Since the introduction of React 16.8, React comes with a built-in hook which makes it easier to manage state and other React features without using class components. In previous React versions, we maintain components using stateful logic and side effects with React componentDidMount, componentDidUpdate among others. However, a simple clean component might end-up becoming a component that is very hard to manage or maintain. The new hook additions have simplified the way we set state in React with just a few lines of code. Among the new default additions are useState, useEffect, useRef, useReducer, useContext, useCallback, useMemo, useImperativeHandle, useLayoutEffect and the useDebugValue. However, React also allows us to create our own custom hooks, so that we can reuse the logic in other components or functions in our application.
